KOKOBOT - The Airbnb-Owned Tech Startup - Data Mining Tumblr Users' Mental Health Crises for "Content"

image

I got this message from a bot, and honestly? If I was a bit younger and not such a jaded bitch with a career in tech, I might have given it an honest try. I spent plenty of time in a tough situation without access to any mental health resources as a teen, and would have been sucked right in.

Chatting right from your phone, and being connected with people who can help you? Sounds nice. Especially if you believe the testimonials they spam you with (tw suicide / self harm mention in below images)

image
image

But I was getting a weird feeling, so I went to read the legalese.

I couldn't even get through the fine-print it asked me to read and agree to, without it spamming the hell out of me. Almost like they expect people to just hit Yes? But I'm glad I stopped to read, because:

image
  • What you say on there won't be confidential. (And for context, I tried it out and the things people were looking for help with? I didn't even feel comfortable sharing here as examples, it was all so deeply personal and painful)
image
  • Also, what you say on there? Is now...
  • Koko's intellectual property - giving them the right to use it in any way they see fit, including
  • Publicly performing or displaying your "content" (also known as your mental health crisis) in any media format and in any media channel without limitation
  • Do this indefinitely after you end your account with them
  • Sell / share this "content" with other businesses
image
image
  • Any harm you come to using Koko? That's on you.
  • And Koko won't take responsibility for anything someone says to you on there (which is bleak when people are using it to spread Christianity to people in crisis)

I was curious about their business model. They're a venture-capitol based tech startup, owned by Airbnb, the famous mental health professionals with a focus on ethical business practices./s They're also begging for donations despite having already been given 2.5 million dollars in research funding. (If you want a deep dive on why people throw crazy money at tech startups, see my other post here)

They also use the data they gather from users to conduct research and publish papers. I didn't find them too interesting - other than as a good case study of "People tend to find what they are financially incentivized to find". Predictably, Koko found that Kokobot was beneficial to its users.

So yeah, being a dumbass with too much curiosity, I decided to use the Airbnb-owned Data-Mining Mental Health Chatline anyway. And if you thought it was dangerous sounding from the disclaimers? Somehow it got worse.

(trigger warning / discussions of child abuse / sexual abuse / suicide / violence below the cut - please don't read if you're not in a good place to hear about negligence around pretty horrific topics.)

Kokobot is incredibly predatory and exploitative. I wrote a post about how it exploits minors' empathy and gamifies "giving mental health advice", resulting in an unregulated mess that can only do harm to teens' mental health in the long run.

There are young people on tumblr that actively seek support from KokoBot right now, if you check the tag for recent posts. Those people did not get paid to promote it, so do not harrass them. If you can, direct them towards resources about Kokobot (like this post) that are more transparent about what this company is up to.

oof i keep getting messages from this too and i was wondering what it was all about

So turns out…..you guys are not gonna believe this…….but it turns out. Reading real books. Is good for you actually.

prettyaveragewhiteshark

Let me be completely clear - I’m not being a sarcastic ass. I’m just realizing all over again, in real time, for myself, that reading a real life published book makes your neurons feel like they’re getting a spa day. Like I can feel my brain getting juicer and wrinklier with every page I turn. This shit is no joke, this is like hard drugs if hard drugs were good for you and made your brain feel revived and alive.

just finished parable of the sower and now i’m reading counterfeit (and started iron widow) and it feels v nice to be back reading

speaking as New Mexican, the Manhattan Project holds a weird place in our culture that lies somewhere between being an amazing technological achievement that should be celebrated, and being one of the worst in a long history of colonialist violences that the US govt has subjected NM to. there is this conception of the desert as an already empty, blighted wasteland that they can use for testing/natural resources as they well please, which ignores the thousands of Hispanic and Native American residents who have called NM home for generations.

even today, there are activists fighting tooth and nail to slow or stop the development of weapons, and also fighting to keep nuclear waste off of peoples' land (once again, the desert is not empty, you can't just dump whatever toxic shit you want). it creates a really strange tension between our conservationists wanting what's best for the land/people and our scientists working in one of the few thriving industries in the state.

and that doesn't even get into the way that the horror of the bombs' detonations in Japan is often glossed over in the NM education system in favor of depicting the Manhattan Project as a glorious scientific achievement. they spent plenty of time in science classes teaching us about the bombs or taking us to the Nuclear Science Museum, but rarely criticized or even properly acknowledged the extreme violence towards civilians that the bombs inflicted.

this is all to say that i think the article above is very important. there's nothing wrong with going to see Oppenheimer, but it's also important to recognize it as a piece of military propaganda, and to thoroughly educate yourself on the real (unglorified) history of the Manhattan Project, even if nuclear science isn't as salient where you live.

ok rereading nona the ninth and i can't believe this never occurred to me but. the kids know about resurrection beasts. they know varun the eater by name.

but like. of course they do. this is what people are constantly being "resettled" over, isn't it? it's not just the war. the lyctors move people off populated planets to flip them. of fucking course beautiful ruby knows what a resurrection beast is. even if he doesn't understand it, even if he doesn't know it by that name, of course he would know what it is. of course these people have names for them.

i can't believe i never considered this before. the children of the nine houses are raised not even knowing about them. harrow, with all her appetite for learning, with an entire library of nasty, forbidden little books at her disposal, had never even heard of them until she became a lyctor. but fucking kevin knows what a resurrection beast is. he knows their names, because he has to.

john has spent ten thousand years keeping them off his precious houses, and he did that by leading them straight into the path of populated planets. this isn't even subtext. we knew this. this isn't new information. i had just never really thought about it in those terms before.

jesus christ, john.

tumblr's current business model isn't profitable and never will be and no amount of scolding from staff blogs or tumblr ad-free pay piggies is gonna fix that. don't let yourself be guilted into buying merch, badges or ad-free. you're throwing your money into a bottomless pit while the techbro ghouls running this website laugh about you at their next board meeting while applauding the shmucks coming up with new ideas on how to twitter- or tiktokify the website

''but tumblr needs to make money!!!''

if tumblr really wants its regular user onboard with keeping the website afloat then we should at least demand that they do the bare minimum in keeping the site functional. and right now, they're not even doing that. every change they've made lately has made the website/app worse. i should give my money to tumblr so what—they can make a more intrusive version of tumblr live? remove the chronical dashboard? come up with an even more transphobic way of doing content moderation? yeah, no thanks

something that rly creeps me out…..occasionally ill see videos or articles for christians or christian missionaries that say something like “what you need to do is make friends with non christians and really get them to trust you and THEN you start preaching to them and bringing them to jesus” and that is….man how much would it hurt to know that the only reason someone’s hanging out with you is to convert you to a religion you were never interested in. maybe this is a real friend, someone you really really feel like you connect to, and all of a sudden you cant hang out with them without being scared they’ll bring out the jesus stuff.
